Why the Atacama is special

It's the driest desert on earth, and it wears that extremity beautifully: steaming high-altitude geysers, a Valley of the Moon, red rocks and altiplanic lagoons full of flamingos, and — after dark — some of the clearest skies on the planet. Few places pack so many genuinely otherworldly landscapes within reach of one small town.

The practicalities

San Pedro de Atacama is the base for everything, reached via Calama airport about an hour away. The sights are far apart and high up, so almost everyone explores on guided half- and full-day tours out of San Pedro rather than self-driving the remote, high-altitude roads.

Go guided, and pace the altitude

Guided tours take on the long drives, the pre-dawn starts, the park fees and the safety at altitude, and add the geology and astronomy that make each stop click. Give yourself a day to acclimatise before El Tatio and the altiplanic lagoons, and don't stack two dawn tours back to back.

Come prepared, and consider Uyuni

Pack for freezing dawns and fierce midday sun in the same day, and carry more water than you expect. If you want more, multi-day tours cross into Bolivia to the Salar de Uyuni salt flats. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means you can lock in departures now and adjust later.
